Ultrafiltration

Ultrafiltration is an effective method of improving the quality parameters of biologically treated wastewater. This process enables more efficient and safer management of wastewater, reuse of treated effluent as process water, or the application of reverse osmosis for further polishing, particularly for salt removal.

1.  Membrane Pore Size: 0.01–0.1 µm

  • Effective contaminant removal: Ultrafiltration eliminates suspended solids, bacteria, viruses, and larger microorganisms, significantly improving water quality.
  • Improved physicochemical parameters: Reduces suspended solids content, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD₅), colour, turbidity, and other contaminants.
  • Enhanced safety: Reduces pathogens and microorganisms, which is essential for subsequent water applications (e.g. reuse, recycling).
  • System protection: Protects downstream treatment stages and equipment from fouling and biofouling.
  • Increased disinfection efficiency: Significantly enhances UV disinfection performance.

2.  Applications in Water Reuse

  • Recycling of process water in industrial sectors (e.g. food, pharmaceutical, paper).
  • Water recovery from biologically treated wastewater – UF as the final step before reuse or further treatment (e.g. reverse osmosis).
  • Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) systems – maximisation of water recovery and minimisation of wastewater generation.

3.  Applications for Highest Discharge Standards

  • Tertiary treatment prior to discharge into surface waters.
  • Removal of pathogens and particles in compliance with WHO and EU standards (e.g. bathing waters, water parks).
  • Reduction of total suspended solids (TSS) to <1 mg/L.
  • Compliance with requirements for ecologically sensitive waters (e.g. high-class rivers).

4.  Advantages of UF in These Applications

  • Very high removal efficiency of microorganisms (log 4–6 for bacteria and viruses).
  • Stable effluent quality regardless of fluctuations in feedwater quality.
  • Potential for automation and continuous operation.
  • Compact design compared with conventional sand filters.

We ensure that maintenance and servicing requirements are minimised, while the equipment is characterised by high durability and reliable operation. This, on the one hand, significantly reduces operating costs and, on the other, increases the performance and efficiency of the units.

As part of the process of selecting equipment or complete technological lines, we provide an analysis of the actual and forecasted conditions at the facility as well as preparation of the technological design.
